how is do they make the glass wire for fibre optics?

How is the actual glass that is used in fibre optic wiring made? The glass has to be near perfect so that it wont crack when bent, plus its incredebly thin. What Type of machines, or tools do they use? Images and sources would be incredibly helpful!

  1. I had to do a report on this when I was in my electronics class in college...I hope this website helps...
  2. It is drawn. One starts with a thick rod with the core and cladding ratio equal to what is required in the final fiber. The rod is heated to around the annealing temperature and drawn (pulled). The glass stretches and gets thinner. This process is controlled resulting in a thin fiber which can be rolled onto a drum as the drawing process continues.
