- some people may be too shy or self consience to say what they are really thinking! pro: non face-to-face communication gives shy or (people lacking confidence) opportunities to voice their opinions. when they are talking to someone on the phone, chatting online, or texting, they often feel safer because they don't have the face-to-face chance of rejection or the fear that comes along with it. con: when people get used to, for example, hiding behind their computer screens to instant message, they aren't practising their real face-to-face social skills. these are needed in the real world.
- PROS: * Ability to convey facial expressions and gestures * Ensure each party is engaged in the conversation * Gauge the understanding of the other party involved (i.e., are they interested? are you confusing them?) and adjust communication style accordingly * Generally quicker interaction than phone or, especially, e-mail or IM. * Generally points are not remembered as well due to environmental distractions CONS: * Face-to-face tends to be a longer interaction * Not as honest because it's much easier to lie to the other person through a medium such as a phone, e-mail, IM, etc. * Mehrabian statistics (commonly referenced in public speaking, psychology classes, business, etc.)--Only able to utilize 45% of the elements of communication: -- 7% of a verbal message comes from the words used -- 38% comes from the tone, cadence, and inflection -- 55% is the speaker’s appearance and body language There are more pros than cons, especially when it comes to building relationships, teaching and conducting business. Bottom line: Face-to-face is far more effective. Hope you can use something from my list. Good luck!
