Communication Needs

How are the perspective of library science and mass communication in the USA?

I am planning to study library science or mass communication in the graduate school. How are their perspectives in the country?

  1. I think only writers, reserachers, professors and students give much thought to library people. I find the reference librarian to be my best associate in researching things. The average joe sees them sitting at a desk reading and probably just thinks it a cush job. As far as mass communications goes there's probably two main views. Those who believe every word they hear on the nightly news and those you says it's all rigged. The truth is probably somewhere near the middle. Mass communications pays more money.
  2. We're in the information age. These two schools are top notch for Information Science. Their websites should be helpful. Good luck. http://www.uwm.edu/Dept/SLIS/ http://ischool.syr.edu/default.asp?fr=1
  3. Job prospects for librarians are excellent. There are a lot of non-technical librarians or those that have not embraced technology that are ripe for retirement. With all the information out there today, the role of the librarian is changing from an information provider to an information detective, helping the patron sift through the mounds of information, some good, some bad. It's a good profession - well respected and fulfilling.
