How can I get internet access on my notebook through my cellphone?

I commute by bus to work and access the internet (mostly email/some internet) during the commute. What is the best way to do this? Do you have any recommendations for good phones and service plans to do this? I would like to use bluetooth so I don't need to tether my phone to the laptop. I might use a card but am hoping to not have to spend the extra ~$80/month. Some cell phones have speeds up to 600kbps. If all of the bandwidth can be transferred to the notebook, this wouldn't be bad (at least just for email).

  1. Using your cellphone as a modem will produce pretty slow Internet speeds. I'd instead consider a data service/plan with your phone co. (Sprint, Verizon...) and get a plug-in PCI card. It plugs in just like a wireless PCI adapter, but it connects you to the phone co.'s wireless data network. Sprint calls it "Mobile Broadband" ( http://powervision.sprint.com/mobilebroadband/ ), and Verizon calls it "National Access" ( http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/mobileoptions/nationalaccess/index.jsp?action=nationalAccess ). Not sure of any other providers yet.
  2. What you're trying to do is very possible, if you have the right cell phone and the right cell phone service. My phone doesn't have bluetooth capability, so I have to use a cable that I bought from MobileAction online: http://global.mobileaction.com/ I use Sprint's Vision network through my Sanyo SCP-7300 using the appropriate MobileAction cable. The speed is only about 2x dial-up, but it works pretty flawlessly as long as I'm in range. Good luck! Annorax64

  4. Read this article and it may give you some ideas. 5. Some phones are capable of decent speeds on the internet. For phones on Sprint and Verizon, it's called EV-DO. On Cingular, it's called UMTS. In any case, I know of two companies that provide the cable and software for the computer: FutureDial and MobileAction. Use their websites to see if their software is compatible with your phone.
