What is meant by shadow free illumination (related to fibre optics)?
Public Comments
- It basic is a new tech that limits the amount of shadowing cause by the light source (microscopes mostly) Problem description Under the current design of this experimental setup, a fibre optic illuminator, through a ring guide that is mounted at the front end of the microscope, provides shadow-free illumination for the vision system. In practical experiments, it is found that this shadow-free illumination is not sensitive enough to the surface relief, while surface relief or roughness is much related to the wear state of the surface. To obtain the highest sensitivity in optical wear detection, the illumination needs to be optimized. First, the system performance will be investigated for various types of illumination, for instance coherent light from a laser and filtered or polarized light from a white light source. Further, the angle of incidence might be another important factor. Finally, a performance measure and an image processing algorithm should be developed for the assessment of the sensitivity of the illumination for wear detection.
